Patna: A six-lane bridge over the Ganga between Sherpur and Dighwara in Bihar is being constructed as part of efforts to improve road connectivity around Patna. With administrative approval of around Rs 4,250 crore, the project is expected to reduce the travel distance between the two locations by approximately 30 km.
According to information shared by the Bihar government’s Road Construction Department, the project includes a six-lane route spanning around 14.5 km. Once operational, it is expected to provide an alternative route for commuters and freight vehicles travelling between Patna, Saran and neighbouring districts.
The bridge forms a key component of the Patna Ring Road project, which aims to strengthen road links around the state capital and reduce the need for some vehicles to pass through the city’s congested areas.
Travel Distance To Reduce By 30 Km
The primary objective of the Sherpur-Dighwara project is to shorten road journeys between Patna and Saran. The proposed connection is expected to reduce travel distances by up to 30 km, potentially lowering fuel consumption and journey times for commuters.
The actual savings will depend on the starting and destination points, as well as the routes used by individual travellers.
The improved connection is also expected to offer greater convenience to people travelling between the two districts for work, business and other essential activities.
Connectivity To Improve For Five Districts
Besides Patna and Saran, the project is expected to benefit road users travelling towards Hajipur, Chhapra, Siwan and Gopalganj.
The additional route could improve access between areas on either side of the Ganga and provide another option for private vehicles and commercial transport. Better road connectivity may also support the movement of goods and regional trade.
The scale of these benefits will depend on the accessibility and condition of the connecting roads once the bridge becomes operational.
Role In Patna Ring Road Project
Traffic congestion remains a challenge on several major roads in Patna. The Sherpur-Dighwara bridge is expected to help address the problem by providing an alternative route for vehicles travelling to destinations outside the city.
If long-distance traffic can use the new connection instead of passing through central Patna, pressure on some of the city’s main roads could ease. The extent of any reduction in congestion will depend on traffic patterns and how effectively the bridge connects with the wider road network.
The project is therefore expected to play an important role in improving regional mobility while strengthening road infrastructure around the state capital.
Completion Timeline Yet To Be Confirmed
Although the project has received administrative approval, an official completion date and the timeline for opening the bridge to traffic have not been provided in the available information.
The expected reduction in travel distance and improvements in connectivity will depend on the completion of the bridge and its connecting roads.
