Patna: The Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) has cancelled the main written examination conducted on May 27, 2026, for recruitment to 1,799 Police Sub-Inspector posts.
The commission has said that a fresh examination date will be announced separately. Candidates have been advised to rely only on official information issued through the BPSSC website for further updates.
The decision comes amid allegations of question-paper irregularities and complaints from candidates regarding the conduct of the examination. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) is investigating cases linked to alleged irregularities reported from examination centres.
Exam Held for 1,799 Sub-Inspector Posts
The main written examination was conducted in two shifts on May 27 under recruitment advertisement number 05/2025.
The recruitment drive covers 1,799 Sub-Inspector vacancies. Of these, 850 posts were earmarked for the unreserved category, while 298 were for Extremely Backward Classes (EBC), 222 for Backward Classes (BC), 180 for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 63 for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
The remaining vacancies included 42 posts for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), 36 for BC women and eight under the freedom fighter quota.
BPSSC Asks Candidates to Ignore Unverified Messages
Following the cancellation, the commission appealed to candidates not to rely on misleading messages being circulated on social media or through other platforms.
Candidates have also been warned against middlemen and asked to report any suspicious activity to the police.
The commission has said that information regarding the fresh examination will be communicated separately through official channels.
Alleged Question-Paper Irregularities Under EOU Probe
The cancellation follows allegations of malpractice and question-paper irregularities during the May examination.
The issue gained attention after reports emerged from Purnia, where a photograph of an examination question paper was reportedly circulated on social media after the exam.
According to the investigation cited in the case, a teacher at Rajkiya Kanya High School in Purnia was arrested. Police alleged that the teacher photographed a question paper after the examination and sent the image to a relative.
The EOU subsequently took up the investigation and sought information from the BPSSC regarding photographs of the question paper or booklet recovered during the probe.
Investigation Also Covers Gaya Case
A separate FIR was registered at Rampur police station in Gaya over alleged irregularities related to the Sub-Inspector examination.
With complaints emerging from more than one location, the matter was taken up by the EOU for further investigation.
The agency formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the cases registered in Gaya and Purnia and to assess evidence and complaints emerging from other districts.
EOU Examines Question-Paper Photographs
One of the key aspects of the investigation is a set of photographs of the question paper or booklet reportedly received by the EOU.
Investigators are examining whether the images are genuine and, if so, determining their source, the examination centre involved and when the photographs were taken.
The EOU is also examining whether the alleged irregularity was limited to specific centres or whether there was a wider pattern.
BPSSC Position: Photograph Taken After Examination
The commission’s position is also central to the investigation.
According to the information cited in the report, the BPSSC has not accepted that the question paper was leaked before or during the examination. The commission’s position is that the photograph of the question paper was taken after the examination had ended.
The investigation will therefore examine the timing of the photograph and whether any candidate had access to the question paper or its contents before the scheduled examination ended.
10,759 Candidates Had Qualified for PET
The main examination result had earlier been declared by the commission, with 10,759 candidates qualifying for the Physical Efficiency Test (PET).
The cancellation of the main examination means the recruitment process will now have to be conducted again in accordance with the fresh schedule to be announced by the BPSSC.
Candidates Had Earlier Protested in Patna
Candidates had previously staged protests in Patna demanding cancellation of the examination and an impartial investigation into the allegations.
Protesting candidates had marched from Patna College towards JP Golambar, carrying placards and raising demands for a probe into the alleged irregularities.
The cancellation now brings the recruitment examination back to the testing stage, with candidates awaiting the commission’s announcement of a new date.
Fresh Examination Date to Be Announced
The BPSSC has not yet announced the date for the re-examination.
Candidates preparing for the recruitment process have been advised to monitor the commission’s official website and avoid relying on unverified information circulating on social media.
The EOU investigation into the alleged examination irregularities is continuing, while the circumstances surrounding the question-paper photographs and complaints from different centres remain under examination.
