Patna: Bihar is likely to witness a spell of intense weather on September 24, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the state.
The IMD’s latest bulletin issued on September 23 has forecast very heavy rain for Bihar on September 24, followed by heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the subsequent days.
Heavy Rain Forecast in North Bihar
According to the forecast provided in the source report, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Siwan and West Champaran are expected to receive very heavy rainfall on September 24.
Rain is also possible in Araria, Kishanganj, Saran and Supaul, with several other parts of the state likely to experience thunderstorms and showers.
The IMD’s broader warning confirms very heavy rain along with thunderstorm and lightning activity across Bihar on September 24.
Bay of Bengal System Behind Weather Change
The latest weather conditions are linked to a weather system over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast.
A cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh and an active trough in the westerly winds are also influencing weather conditions over the region.
Strong Winds, Thunderstorms and Lightning Warning
The weather department has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40–50 kmph in affected areas.
The combination of heavy rain, lightning and strong winds could affect normal activities, particularly in open and exposed areas.
The IMD’s Bihar warning specifically lists thunderstorm and lightning activity alongside the very heavy rain forecast for September 24.
Temperature to Remain Stable Initially
Despite the expected rain, temperatures are likely to remain broadly stable over the next couple of days.
The source report said maximum temperatures across Bihar had remained between 33.4°C and 38.1°C during the preceding 24 hours. Bhabua in Kaimur recorded the highest temperature at 38.1°C, while Valmikinagar in West Champaran recorded the lowest at 24°C.
Strong winds reaching 57 kmph were also recorded in Bhojpur during the period.
Weather Activity to Continue After September 24
The unsettled weather is not expected to end immediately after Thursday. The IMD has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorm/lightning activity on September 25 and 26 as well. Thunderstorm and lightning activity may continue on September 27 before conditions improve.
The forecast for Muzaffarpur, for example, indicates rain or thundershowers around this period, with thunderstorm and lightning warnings also in place.
Residents Advised to Take Precautions
Residents are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning. People should avoid open fields, rooftops and isolated areas during periods of lightning and move indoors to a safe, permanent structure.
People should also stay away from tall trees, electric poles and other exposed structures during thunderstorms and follow updates issued by the weather department and local authorities.
With heavy rain expected in parts of Bihar on September 24, commuters should also remain alert to possible waterlogging, reduced visibility and disruptions on affected routes.
Weather Watch for September 24
The latest forecast indicates that north and northwestern Bihar will remain among the areas of greater concern for heavy rainfall, while thunderstorms and lightning could affect wider parts of the state.
Residents are advised to monitor updated district-level forecasts as weather conditions can change rapidly during an active spell.
