Patna: The Bihar government is preparing to resume stone mining operations in seven districts after the monsoon, with the Mines and Geology Department completing key procedural requirements for the allocation of mining leases.
District Survey Reports (DSRs) have been prepared for Sheikhpura, Gaya, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Kaimur and Banka districts, while the DSR for Nawada has already received departmental approval. The government is expected to initiate the e-auction process for mining leases in these districts in the coming months.
31 quarries proposed
According to official information, mining operations have been proposed at a total of 31 stone quarries across the seven districts.
The department expects the e-auction process to improve transparency in the allocation of mining leases while generating revenue for the state. Officials also say that increased local availability of stone could support infrastructure and construction projects within Bihar.
At present, limited stone production in the state has led to dependence on supplies from neighbouring states for construction activities.
Survey reports completed
The District Survey Reports include assessments of environmental parameters, geological conditions, mineral reserves and the potential impact of mining on surrounding areas.
Officials said mining leases would be auctioned only after all statutory and regulatory requirements are completed.
Mining activities are expected to commence in phases after the end of the monsoon season.
Potential impact on employment and construction
Industry observers say the resumption of mining could create employment opportunities in quarry operations, transportation, stone crushing units and related sectors.
The prolonged disruption of mining activities has also affected the supply of construction materials in parts of the state. Increased local production may help stabilise availability and prices, according to sector experts.
Online auction process planned
The department has indicated that the lease allocation process will be conducted through an online e-auction system.
Officials said the digital process is intended to improve transparency and help curb irregularities and illegal mining activities through greater oversight and monitoring.
