Begusarai: In a gruesome incident that has exposed serious lapses in election-time security checks, a government school teacher from Bihar allegedly strangled his girlfriend to death and carried her body nearly 270 kilometres on a motorcycle before dumping it in Begusarai.
The accused, identified as Gopal, a teacher at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Residential School in Motihara, Kishanganj, killed Bharti Kumari alias Sangam Kumari, his girlfriend, on October 13. Bharti, originally from Begusarai, was living in Patna and preparing for competitive exams.
Murder in Kishanganj, Body Found in Begusarai
According to police, Gopal strangled Bharti to death inside his government quarters on the school campus after discovering “objectionable photos” of her with another man on her mobile phone. He later stuffed her body into a white sack, covered it with clothes, and loaded it onto his bike.
He then travelled from Kishanganj to Begusarai — crossing Purnia, Katihar, and Khagaria districts — before dumping the sack in a field near Khorampur village under Matihani police station limits. Shockingly, despite the ongoing election security arrangements, Gopal was not stopped by any police personnel during the five-hour journey.
CCTV footage from Kharagpur, Navgachhiya, and Lakhotol Plaza captured the accused travelling with the sack.
Body Found, Call Details Crack the Case
On October 15, villagers discovered the decomposed body inside a sack in Begusarai, prompting police to launch an investigation. During the probe, officers retrieved Bharti’s call records and found she last spoke to her family around 8 pm on October 11. Her phone was switched off after October 13.
Location tracking revealed that she had travelled to Kishanganj with Gopal, raising police suspicion. The accused was traced and arrested from Prayagraj on October 25.
During interrogation, Gopal confessed to the crime, telling police that he and Bharti had been in a relationship for two years. In a fit of rage after an argument, he strangled her to death, went to school to maintain routine, and later disposed of the body.
Public Outrage Over Security Failure
Residents of Begusarai expressed anger after the revelation that the accused crossed four district borders without any checks, despite heightened police presence during election duty. The case has once again highlighted glaring lapses in Bihar’s policing and the vulnerability of women in relationships marked by violence and control.
