Patna: The Bihar government has prepared to begin the first phase of its long-awaited teacher transfer exercise, under which around 27,000 teachers will be transferred before the remaining vacant posts are filled through fresh postings. The Education Department has decided to prioritise teachers suffering from cancer, other serious illnesses, disabilities, mental health conditions, and those whose spouses are posted in different districts.
According to official information, nearly 17,000 teachers have their husbands or wives serving in another district. The government is preparing to post such couples in the same district wherever possible.
The department’s data further shows that around 700 teachers are battling cancer, while nearly 2,500 teachers are suffering from heart disease, spinal disorders, migraine and other serious medical conditions. More than 5,000 teachers fall under the disability or other special categories, while nearly 1,800 teachers are dealing with mental illness, have mentally ill family members, or are widows facing exceptional circumstances.
Priority Order Finalised for Transfers
Officials said teachers suffering from serious illnesses, mental health conditions and disabilities will be transferred first. Transfers based on spouse separation will be taken up in the next phase.
Across all eligible categories, women teachers will receive preference, while male teachers will be considered only if vacancies remain after accommodating eligible women.
The state government estimates that nearly 4 lakh teachers may submit applications for transfers during the exercise.
Transfer Orders and Posting Letters to Be Issued Together
The Education Department plans to complete the transfer and posting process for nearly 5.80 lakh headmasters, head teachers and teachers serving in around 78,000 government schools across Bihar.
As teachers are scheduled to begin teaching in their new schools from July 1, the department has decided to complete the transfer process on priority.
Teachers seeking voluntary transfers will receive approval immediately if vacant posts are available. Their posting letters will also be generated and updated simultaneously, ensuring they can join their new schools without delay.
Teachers suffering from serious illnesses and disabilities will be given postings as close to their homes as possible, while transfers of other teachers will be carried out according to departmental rules.
Education Minister Warns of Strict Action Against Negligence
Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari said the department would continue to monitor teachers’ performance even after the transfer process is completed.
“Departmental action will be taken against teachers found negligent in performing their teaching duties,” the minister said.
