Patna: Almost 3,000 government-appointed teachers in Bihar are facing the loss of their jobs after a vigilance inquiry found that they had secured employment using forged academic certificates and falsified mark sheets.
According to officials, a verification exercise completed in December 2025 revealed that 2,916 teachers across multiple districts were appointed on the basis of fake or tampered documents. First information reports (FIRs) have been registered against all those identified so far.
The investigation found multiple forms of fraud, including inflated marks, altered roll numbers, and the use of certificates belonging to other candidates. In several cases, discrepancies were found in personal details such as parents’ names, while some certificates were traced to non-existent universities or unrecognised education boards.
The vigilance department said the figure was not final and could rise further, as verification is still ongoing. The inquiry was ordered by the Patna High Court and covers teacher appointments made between 2006 and 2015.
J S Gangwar, director general of vigilance, said investigators were also probing the role of organised rackets suspected of producing forged documents in exchange for large sums of money.
One case registered at Patna’s Kotwali police station revealed that a teacher listed as having passed the eligibility test had not appeared for the exam at all. Records showed that the roll number used belonged to another candidate whose marks were allegedly altered to secure the appointment.
Officials said that in several instances, forged mark sheets costing between Rs. 2 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh were used to obtain teaching jobs, with salaries drawn for years before detection.
Separately, concerns have also been raised over the future of thousands of teachers who have either failed to qualify or did not appear for the mandatory competency examination. Of the 346,000 teachers eligible, around 67,000 have yet to clear the process, putting their employment status under review.
