Patna/Gopalganj: Authorities in the eastern Indian state of Bihar have suspended a police officer following a theft at the Thave Durga temple, a prominent religious site in Gopalganj district, amid mounting pressure over alleged security failures.
The suspension was ordered after Neelesh Kumar, deputy inspector general (DIG) of the Saran range, visited the temple and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident. The officer in charge of the local police outpost (TOP), Dheeraj Kumar, was removed from duty with immediate effect for what officials described as negligence in security arrangements.
The incident also prompted a visit from Bihar’s education minister, Sunil Kumar, who inspected the temple premises, offered prayers, and met senior police officials. Calling the theft “deeply condemnable”, the minister directed authorities to ensure the swift arrest of those involved and to conduct a comprehensive review of the temple’s security.
“This is a sacred place of immense public faith,” Sunil Kumar said. “Such an incident is unacceptable. The police have been instructed to act decisively and ensure that the culprits are not spared.”
DIG Neelesh Kumar said the administration would take strict action at any level where lapses were found. In addition to the suspension, an inquiry has been ordered into the role of patrol teams deployed in the area at the time of the theft.
Police are currently examining CCTV footage, conducting technical surveillance, and questioning local residents as part of the investigation. Officials said additional security personnel may be deployed to strengthen protection at the temple.
The Thave Durga temple, considered a major centre of religious devotion in the region, has drawn widespread attention following the incident. Authorities have said they expect to resolve the case soon and restore public confidence in the site’s security.
