Patna: Police in Bihar have detained 10 youths after a young woman was allegedly gang raped late on Friday night after being forcibly removed from a train between Bela railway station and Chakand railway station on the Gaya–Patna route, officials said.
The woman, a resident of Jehanabad district, was travelling to her maternal home in Neuri Bazar in Belaganj when a group of men reportedly pulled the train’s emergency chain, bringing it to a halt. According to police, she was then dragged off the train and taken to a secluded area, where the assault is alleged to have taken place.
Officers from Belaganj police station said they were alerted to the incident shortly afterwards and dispatched a team to the scene. Acting on suspicion, they detained 10 unidentified youths for questioning.
A first information report (FIR) was registered on Saturday following a formal complaint by the survivor. Police said a medical examination had been conducted and forensic specialists had visited the site to gather evidence.
Ravi Prakash Singh, a deputy superintendent of police, said an investigation was under way and described it as “serious and thorough”. He added that those responsible would be identified and arrested.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over passenger safety on rail routes in the state, particularly in isolated stretches where trains can be halted using emergency chains.
