Patna: Bihar is set to strengthen its water conservation efforts with the construction of a Tertiary Treatment and Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant at Barh at an estimated cost of ₹74.71 crore. The facility will further purify treated sewage water from the Barh Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for industrial use at the NTPC Barh power plant.
11 Million Litres of Water to Be Reused Daily
The Barh STP will provide around 11 million litres of treated water every day. The water will undergo additional treatment through the TTRO system before being supplied for industrial requirements at NTPC Barh.
The project aims to convert treated sewage into a usable resource instead of relying solely on freshwater sources for industrial operations.
Reducing Pressure on Groundwater and Rivers
The reuse of treated sewage water is expected to reduce the dependence of industrial facilities on groundwater and other natural water sources.
By replacing freshwater with treated wastewater for industrial purposes, the project will support water conservation while promoting more sustainable water management practices.
How the TTRO System Works
The sewage will first undergo treatment at the STP, where solid waste, organic pollutants and harmful microorganisms are removed.
The TTRO process will then provide additional purification using technologies such as ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. These processes help remove dissolved salts, chemicals and other impurities, making the treated water suitable for industrial applications.
Push for Water Recycling
The project is expected to strengthen Bihar’s efforts towards wastewater recycling and the development of a circular water economy.
With increasing water demand driven by population growth and industrial activity, the reuse of treated sewage could help conserve freshwater resources and improve long-term water security.
