The Bihar government has implemented a revised postgraduate (PG) curriculum for 46 subjects across universities in the state. The new syllabus, covering both the first and second years of postgraduate programmes, will come into effect from the 2026-27 academic session.
The notification was issued by the Governor’s Secretariat following the approval of Governor-cum-Chancellor Syed Ata Hasnain.
The revised curriculum has been prepared in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the University Grants Commission’s Postgraduate Curriculum Framework (PGCF), with an emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, flexibility and skill development.
Students to have greater academic flexibility
Under the new framework, postgraduate students will be able to choose subjects based on their interests through elective and skill-based courses alongside their core disciplines.
The revised curriculum has been introduced for the following 46 postgraduate subjects:

- Bhojpuri
- Biochemistry

New semester and credit structure
Under the revised academic structure, students will be required to earn 22 credits in each semester.
Each semester will consist of six papers, with every paper carrying four credits and 100 marks. The evaluation pattern includes:
- 70 marks through the end-semester written examination.
- 30 marks through internal assessment.
Students must secure a minimum of 45% marks in each paper to pass.
Course composition
Every semester will include:
- Four Core Courses
- One Generic Elective course
- One Value-Added/Skill Enhancement course
The revised curriculum is expected to make postgraduate education more multidisciplinary and aligned with national higher education reforms envisioned under NEP 2020, while offering students greater flexibility in designing their academic pathway.
