Bettiah/Patna : A major connectivity project linking Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is awaiting final approval, with a Rs 2,000 crore bridge over the Gandak River proposed on National Highway NH-727AA.
The proposed bridge is expected to improve road connectivity between Bettiah in Bihar and Gorakhpur and Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh, while reducing the travel distance between the two regions.
The project received financial approval in October 2025, and construction is now awaiting approval from the Union Cabinet. Discussions have reportedly taken place between the Bihar Road Construction Department and the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways regarding early clearance of the pending project.
12-Km Bridge to Connect Bettiah and Kushinagar
The proposed bridge will be around 12 kilometres long, making it one of the longest bridges in Bihar.
The bridge is planned between Manua Pul in Bettiah and the Tiwari Patti-Sewrahi area of Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh.
Including the approach roads, the total length of the project is expected to be around 29.5 kilometres.
The combined road-and-bridge project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 2,000 crore.
Project Proposed Under Hybrid Annuity Model
The project is proposed to be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM).
Under the proposed financing arrangement, the selected construction agency will bear around 60 per cent of the project cost, while the remaining 40 per cent will be provided by the Central Government.
The construction agency will also be responsible for maintaining the bridge and associated road infrastructure for 15 years.
The project is expected to include a toll-based mechanism through which the construction agency can recover its investment.
Better Connectivity Between Bihar and Eastern UP
Once completed, the bridge is expected to create a new and important road link between North Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Residents of West Champaran and East Champaran, besides Bettiah and surrounding areas, are expected to benefit from easier access to destinations in Uttar Pradesh.
The improved route could also make travel towards Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Tamkuhi Raj and Sewrahi more convenient.
Boost Expected for Trade and Economic Activity
The proposed road link is expected to benefit not only passengers but also commercial and economic activity along the Bihar-UP border.
Improved connectivity could make the movement of people, goods and commercial vehicles between the two states easier and more efficient.
The project is therefore being viewed as an important infrastructure link for strengthening regional connectivity and supporting economic activity in the border districts.
Cabinet Approval Now Awaited
Although the project has received financial approval, construction can move ahead only after the required Union Cabinet approval.
Following the Cabinet’s clearance, the construction process and other formal procedures can proceed.
If approved and completed as planned, the bridge is expected to become a major new road connection between Bihar’s West Champaran region and Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur-Kushinagar belt.
