Patna: Large parts of Bihar witnessed heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms over the past 24 hours, bringing significant relief from the intense summer heat. However, lightning strikes during the storms claimed eight lives across different districts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms and rain in 25 districts of Bihar on Saturday. According to the weather department, similar weather conditions are likely to continue across the state for the next few days.
The sudden change in weather has led to a sharp drop in temperatures. Kaimur, which recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature of 39.9 degrees Celsius on Thursday, saw the mercury fall to 34.5 degrees Celsius on Friday following the rainfall.
Officials said the rain and strong winds are expected to provide temporary relief from the scorching heat and humidity. However, meteorologists have warned that temperatures are likely to rise again after June 2, leading to a renewed spell of hot weather.
June Forecast: Less Rainfall, More Heatwave Days Expected
The weather department has also released its forecast for June, predicting below-normal rainfall in most parts of Bihar during the month.
The state normally receives an average rainfall of 163.3 mm in June, but several regions may witness lower-than-normal precipitation this year. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain within the normal range of 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.
However, minimum temperatures are likely to remain above normal, which could make nights warmer and more uncomfortable. The IMD has forecast minimum temperatures between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius during June.
The department has further warned that some districts, particularly in south and central Bihar, may experience more heatwave days than usual during the month.
Reason Behind Sudden Weather Change
According to the IMD, moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, combined with the impact of a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation, are influencing Bihar’s weather conditions.
Weather experts said pre-monsoon activities are gradually becoming active over the region, resulting in cloudy skies, gusty winds, and light to moderate rainfall in many parts of the state.
Several districts, including Bettiah, Jehanabad, and Buxar, witnessed dark skies and intense thunderstorms during the day on Friday.
Patna Likely to Witness More Rain
The weather department has predicted thunderstorms, rain, and gusty winds in Patna on Saturday. Wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph, while cloudy conditions are expected to persist throughout the day.
Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions and avoid open fields, trees, and electric poles during thunderstorms.
