Patna: The Patna Meteorological Centre has warned of a rapid change in weather conditions across Bihar beginning May 20, with thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning expected in several districts over the coming days.
The department has issued district-wise Orange and Yellow alerts to help residents prepare for potentially severe weather conditions.
Orange Alert Issued For Several Districts On May 20
According to the forecast, May 20 is expected to witness the most intense spell of adverse weather during the week.
An Orange Alert has been issued for:
- West Champaran
- East Champaran
- Gopalganj
- Siwan
- Saran
- Supaul
- Araria
- Kishanganj
- Purnia
- Katihar
- Saharsa
Meteorologists said these districts could experience:
- strong winds gusting between 50 and 60 kmph
- thunderstorms
- lightning activity
- rainfall

Yellow Alert For Remaining Districts
A Yellow Alert has meanwhile been issued for several other districts, including:

- Sitamarhi
- Sheohar
- Muzaffarpur
- Darbhanga
- Madhubani
- Vaishali
- Samastipur
- Madhepura
- Khagaria
- Begusarai
- Bhagalpur
- Munger
- Lakhisarai
- Sheikhpura
- Nalanda
- Nawada
- Jamui
- Banka
- Jehanabad
- Arwal
- Gaya
- Aurangabad
- Rohtas
- Kaimur
- Bhojpur
- Buxar
Officials said these districts were also likely to witness unstable weather conditions with risks of storms and lightning.
Adverse Conditions To Continue On May 21 And 22
The Meteorological Department said the threat of severe weather would continue on May 21 across parts of eastern and southern Bihar.
A Yellow Alert remains in place for:
- Supaul
- Araria
- Kishanganj
- Purnia
- Katihar
- Madhepura
- Saharsa
- Khagaria
- Begusarai
- Bhagalpur
- Munger
- Lakhisarai
- Sheikhpura
- Nalanda
- Nawada
- Jamui
- Banka
Winds in these districts could blow at speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.
On May 22, weather alerts will remain active mainly in:
- Supaul
- Araria
- Kishanganj
- Purnia
- Katihar
- Saharsa
- Madhepura
while conditions in most other districts are expected to improve temporarily.
Statewide Alert Issued For May 23
The department has also issued a Yellow Alert for all 38 districts of Bihar on May 23, warning that storms, rainfall, gusty winds and lightning activity could once again intensify across the state.
Authorities have advised residents to:
- avoid standing near trees and electric poles during storms
- stay away from open fields during lightning activity
- step outdoors only when necessary during severe weather
Officials said weather conditions would continue to fluctuate due to active pre-monsoon systems over eastern India.
