Patna: Bihar may have seen a slight reprieve from the biting cold, but the respite will be short-lived. With westerly winds slowing, minimum temperatures have inched up across several districts. Yet dense fog is now tightening its grip over much of the state, prompting safety advisories and disruptions on major routes.
Thick fog blanketed several regions on Friday morning, forcing vehicles to crawl and leaving roads barely visible. In many areas, visibility dropped to just 10–20 metres, severely affecting schoolchildren, commuters and highway traffic.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe fog alert for the next 48 hours across Patna, Gaya, Aurangabad, Bhojpur, Buxar, Nalanda and parts of East and West Champaran. Residents have been urged to avoid travel unless necessary.

Temperatures steady but fog to stay
Despite the poor visibility, temperatures are expected to remain stable across the state. Daytime temperatures will hover between 26°C and 32°C, while night-time temperatures will range from 12°C to 18°C, according to the Bihar Mausam Seva Kendra. Light westerly winds of 20–25 km/h will keep conditions dry even as humidity deepens the fog cover.

Forecast for November 21–27: A week of ‘fog–cold’
Meteorologists warn that Bihar is heading into a week marked by a persistent combination of fog and mild cold.
- South Bihar is expected to see daytime temperatures of 26–28°C.
- North Bihar and central districts may climb slightly higher, to 28–30°C.
- Night temperatures will hold steady at 14–16°C across most areas, with a cooler 12–14°C likely in south-west and south-central districts.
- Light to moderate fog will persist each morning, reducing visibility across major roads and highways.
Experts caution that deteriorating air quality may accompany the haze. Those with asthma or respiratory conditions have been advised to wear masks outdoors.
The IMD says that while afternoons may clear, mornings across Bihar are set to stay grey, damp and treacherous for the next several days.
