Patna: Bihar is experiencing sharply contrasting weather conditions, with scorching heat gripping southern districts while parts of the Seemanchal region brace for light rainfall over the coming days.
The next 48 hours are expected to be particularly severe in South Bihar, including Patna, where rising temperatures and dry winds have disrupted daily life.
Heat intensifies across southern districts
On Wednesday, Dehri recorded the highest temperature in the state at 41.8°C, as intense heat and westerly winds swept across the region.
Cities such as Patna, Gaya and Aurangabad have also been experiencing extreme conditions, with dry winds reducing humidity and amplifying the sensation of heat.
Afternoons have seen deserted streets as residents remain indoors to avoid exposure, with officials warning against stepping out during peak hours.
Limited relief in Seemanchal
The India Meteorological Department has forecast light rainfall or drizzle between April 17 and 19 in parts of north-eastern Bihar, including:
- Purnia
- Katihar
- Araria
- Kishanganj
While the rainfall is expected to be scattered, it may bring temporary relief through cooler winds and a slight drop in temperatures.

Heatwave warning issued
Despite this limited respite, the IMD has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for several districts in South and Central Bihar, including Buxar, Bhojpur, Kaimur and Aurangabad.
From April 18 onwards, heatwave conditions—commonly referred to as loo—are expected to intensify, with temperatures likely to remain above 40°C in several areas.
Residents advised caution
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions, stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun as the state braces for continued extreme weather conditions.
Meteorologists said the contrasting patterns underline seasonal instability, with localised rainfall offering only brief relief against a broader trend of rising heat.
