Patna: Bihar is likely to witness light rainfall in five districts on Thursday, while weather conditions are expected to remain largely normal across the rest of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain at isolated places in East Champaran, West Champaran, Siwan, Saran and Gopalganj.
According to the weather department, winds may reach speeds of up to 40 kmph in these districts. While light rain and cloudy conditions could provide brief relief in some areas, the overall weather is expected to remain humid, with people likely to continue experiencing uncomfortable heat.
5 districts may receive light rain
East Champaran, West Champaran, Siwan, Saran and Gopalganj may receive light rainfall at isolated locations on Thursday. Gusty winds of up to 40 kmph are also possible in these areas.
The remaining 33 districts are expected to experience generally normal weather, although light clouds may remain in the sky. The cloudy conditions are unlikely to bring significant relief from the heat and humidity.
Over the past 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in Khagaria. Light winds were reported in Patna and several other districts, but strong sunshine during the day kept humidity levels high.
Bihar records 41% less rainfall this monsoon
Bihar continues to face a significant rainfall deficit during the ongoing monsoon season. The state should have received around 485.4 mm of rainfall by this time, against which only 285.1 mm has been recorded.
This means Bihar has received 41% less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon.
Why has the monsoon weakened?
Weather experts said the monsoon is currently weak, mainly because the monsoon trough has shifted away from its normal position. In addition, no strong low-pressure system has developed over the Bay of Bengal in recent days.
As a result, sufficient moisture is not reaching Bihar. Experts said widespread and substantial rainfall is likely to remain limited until a new weather system becomes active over the Bay of Bengal.
Why is Bihar seeing sudden heat followed by rain?
Weather experts said rapid changes in conditions over the past few days are linked to daytime heat and humidity. Strong sunshine during the day increases heat near the surface. The warm air rises and interacts with moisture in the atmosphere, leading to cloud formation and occasional light to moderate rain in some areas.
This explains why some parts of Bihar have been experiencing rain during the evening or night after a hot and humid day.
The rainfall is also highly localised, meaning one district may receive rain while neighbouring areas remain dry.
Patna weather forecast for Thursday
In Patna, weather conditions are expected to remain generally normal on Thursday, with partly cloudy skies and intermittent cloud cover throughout the day.
There is no significant possibility of heavy rainfall in the capital. Sunshine and high humidity are likely to make conditions uncomfortable, although some relief from the heat may be felt in the evening as clouds increase.
