Patna: Weather conditions across Bihar continue to fluctuate as the southwest monsoon gradually withdraws from the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for rain, thunderstorms and lightning in 18 districts on Friday.
Meanwhile, weather conditions are expected to remain largely normal in Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, Nawada, Sheikhpura and several other districts. According to the weather department, maximum temperatures are unlikely to witness any significant change over the next five days.
The IMD has forecast a gradual improvement in weather conditions from October 10, with skies expected to become largely clear. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Rain Recorded in Several Districts
During the past 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in Patna, Begusarai, Madhubani, Araria, Supaul, Bagaha and Samastipur, among other places. Kaimur recorded the highest maximum temperature during the period.
Despite the recent rainfall, Bihar has recorded below-normal precipitation for the fifth consecutive year. The state had received 25% more rainfall than normal in 2021, but rainfall has remained deficient in the subsequent years.
This year, Bihar recorded only 36 rainy days, compared with the expected 45 to 52 days during the monsoon season. Under IMD standards, a day is officially counted as a rainy day when a location receives at least 2.5 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Progresses
The southwest monsoon is gradually withdrawing from Bihar as well as other parts of the country.
On October 8, the monsoon withdrew from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, Goa, and parts of Karnataka, Telangana and Odisha, along with additional areas of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
According to the IMD, the withdrawal line was passing through Supaul, Ranchi, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Bijapur, Hyderabad, Belagavi and Panaji. The movement of this line indicates that the monsoon withdrawal process is progressing across eastern India, including Bihar.
Why Is Bihar Still Experiencing Rain?
According to the weather department, a cyclonic circulation persists over northeast Bihar and adjoining areas at an altitude of approximately 3.1 to 4.5 km above mean sea level. A trough extends from this system through Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh towards Telangana.
Another cyclonic circulation is present over eastern Uttar Pradesh, extending up to an altitude of around 1.5 km.
These weather systems are contributing to rainfall, strong winds and lightning in parts of Bihar even as the southwest monsoon withdraws from the region.
Patna Weather Forecast
Patna is likely to experience cloudy skies on Friday, with the possibility of rain in some areas. Conditions may remain warm and humid, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 30 degrees Celsius.
The weather is expected to become more settled from October 10. The IMD has not issued any weather warnings for October 10 and 11, indicating that rainfall and thunderstorm activity may decrease considerably.
However, isolated areas could still experience light cloud cover or scattered showers.
Residents are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning activity and follow official weather advisories.
