Patna: The weather in Bihar is expected to turn volatile over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for 19 districts. Officials have warned that several parts of the state could experience heavy rain, lightning strikes and strong winds within the next 24 hours.
According to the department, thunderstorms accompanied by wind speeds of 30 to 40km/h are likely on March 17. Authorities say the changing weather pattern has already begun affecting parts of the state, prompting warnings for residents to remain cautious during outdoor activities.
The alert covers districts including Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Katihar, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Munger, Banka, Vaishali, Samastipur and Jamui. Weather officials have urged people in these areas to remain alert, particularly farmers who are advised to avoid staying in open fields during lightning or heavy rain.
Meteorologists say temperatures across most parts of the state are unlikely to change significantly in the next 24 hours. However, a gradual drop is expected over the following three days, with maximum temperatures predicted to fall by around 2–4C. On Sunday, the lowest minimum temperature in the state was recorded at 17.6C in Rajgir.
Experts attribute the unsettled conditions to increased moisture in the lower atmosphere combined with localised convective activity. As a result, Bihar may experience unstable weather for up to a week, with thunderstorms and rain likely in several districts. Northern and eastern parts of the state are expected to feel the strongest impact, while south-western areas could see intermittent sunshine alongside passing clouds.
