Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts in Bihar, warning of rain, thunderstorms, lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 km/h on Sunday.

The department said wet weather is likely to persist across the state until July 29, while advising residents to remain alert during periods of lightning and strong winds.

Bihar Continues To Face 37% Rainfall Deficit

Despite recent showers, Bihar remains well below its normal monsoon rainfall.

According to meteorological data, the state has received 277.5 mm of rainfall so far this season against the normal 442.3 mm, leaving it with a 37% rainfall deficit.

Meteorologists attributed the current spell of rain to the monsoon trough, which is passing close to Bihar. The trough extends from Rajasthan across central India and Jharkhand to the north-eastern Bay of Bengal, creating favourable conditions for rainfall across the state.

Cool easterly winds blowing at 5 to 15 km/h are also helping maintain high humidity levels, preventing temperatures from rising sharply despite intermittent sunshine.

Patna Records Highest Rainfall

During the past 24 hours, Phulwarisharif in Patna district recorded the highest rainfall at 53.6 mm.

Other notable rainfall figures included:

  • Nawada: 52 mm
  • Patna Airport: 42.7 mm
  • Pakribarawan (Nawada): 36.4 mm
  • Pusa (Samastipur): 34.2 mm
  • Bochahan (Muzaffarpur): 34.2 mm

Officials said Nalanda, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Jehanabad and Buxar received near-normal rainfall, while Gaya, Vaishali, Begusarai, Arwal and Sheikhpura remained below normal.

Patna To See Four More Days Of Unsettled Weather

The IMD has forecast cloudy skies over Patna for the next four days, with intermittent rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 32°C and 35°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to hover between 26°C and 27°C.

Advisory For Residents And Farmers

The Meteorological Department has urged people to avoid going outdoors during thunderstorms or lightning unless absolutely necessary.

Residents have been advised to stay away from trees, electricity poles and open fields during adverse weather.

Farmers have also been asked to check weather forecasts before working in their fields to minimise the risk of lightning-related accidents.
