Patna: Savita Devi, a resident of Taregana Deeh in Masaurhi, Bihar, has been invited by President Droupadi Murmu as a special guest for the Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi. Devi will attend the formal dinner hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the evening of August 15.
Devi, a beneficiary of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) – Urban, was selected for her exemplary use of the housing scheme. She constructed her home under PMAY 1.0 and works as a Community Resource Person (CRP) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission in the Masaurhi Nagar Parishad.
Speaking to reporters, she said: “I am very happy that I will meet President Droupadi Murmu on the occasion of Independence Day. This is the first time I’ve had the honour of meeting the President. The entire locality is congratulating me.”

The news has sparked celebrations in her neighbourhood, with friends, family, and municipal officials extending their congratulations.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, launched in 2015, aims to provide affordable housing to urban and rural low-income groups. Under PMAY-Urban, eligible beneficiaries can receive financial assistance of up to Rs 2.5 lakh to build a home on their own land, or access subsidised housing through private-public partnerships. A home loan interest subsidy of up to Rs 1.8 lakh is also available.
To qualify, applicants must not own a pucca house and must fall under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) with an annual income of up to Rs 3 lakh. For PMAY-Rural, eligibility extends to those living in kutcha homes with limited shelter.
Applications for the scheme can be submitted via the official portal pmay-urban.gov.in, where applicants must verify Aadhaar details and submit income and housing documentation for approval.
“It is a matter of great pride that someone from our locality is being hosted by the President of India,” said a local resident.
