Katihar: A woman was killed after being hit by a speeding car in Katihar district of Bihar on Tuesday morning. The accident happened around 11am at Pawai Chowk under Koira police station area. The woman, 35-year-old Rani Devi, was returning home after meeting her husband when a car going from Gedabari to Kursela ran over her. She died on the spot.
Soon after the accident, a large crowd gathered at the place. People became very angry over the woman’s death and blocked National Highway 31. They stopped the car that had hit Rani Devi, but the driver and passengers ran away, leaving the vehicle behind to save themselves from the mob.
In anger, the locals set the car on fire. The vehicle burned for a long time before the fire brigade team arrived and controlled the flames. Police from Koira and Kodha stations reached the spot and tried for hours to calm the crowd, but people remained upset and blocked the road for a long time. This led to a long traffic jam on both sides of the highway.
The villagers have demanded compensation for Rani Devi’s family and strict action against the driver who ran away. Police have seized the burnt car and sent the woman’s body for post-mortem. They are trying to find the driver who caused this accident and escaped.
