Bettiah: A married woman in Bettiah, Bihar, was brutally tortured by her in-laws who allegedly branded her with a hot iron rod for dowry. The shocking incident took place in Gudra Ward 3 under Majhaulia police station. The woman, Chandni Devi, was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) with severe injuries on her back and thigh.
According to the police, the victim’s husband Ramnivas Sah, his parents Jagannath Sah and Fujhari Devi, and a relative Dinanath Sah have been booked under dowry and assault charges. Chandni told the police that after her marriage to Ramnivas in 2019, her in-laws started demanding Rs 1 lakh in cash and a Bolero. She said she was tortured and thrown out of the house several times for not fulfilling their demands.
On the night of 18 July, Chandni was attacked again. Her in-laws entered her room, beat her up, and burned her with a hot iron rod. Her father, who learned about the incident, reached her in-laws’ house with a Dial 112 police team and rushed her to Majhaulia Primary Health Centre. Due to her serious condition, doctors referred her to GMCH for better treatment.
Police said an FIR has been registered based on Chandni’s statement and the investigation is ongoing. The incident has sparked anger among locals, who are demanding strict punishment for those involved in this cruel dowry torture.
