Patna: Bihar has recorded a sharp rise in complaints related to crimes against women, with more than 69,000 cases registered on the state’s women’s helpline in the financial year 2025–26, according to official data from the Women and Child Development Corporation.
A total of 69,101 complaints were received on Helpline 181 across the state during the period, while 58,596 cases have been resolved so far. Officials said the majority of complaints were linked to domestic violence, followed by cybercrime, dowry harassment and other forms of familial and social abuse.
The data also highlights a growing number of cases involving the unauthorized circulation of women’s photographs online, cyber harassment and digital threats, reflecting an increasing overlap between gender-based violence and technology.
Patna reported the highest number of complaints among all districts, with 6,928 cases registered. Of these, 5,995 have been resolved. Authorities noted that cyber harassment and cases involving viral or misused images were particularly prevalent in the capital.
Gaya recorded 4,036 complaints, with 2,620 cases disposed of, while Begusarai saw 2,950 complaints, of which 1,793 have been resolved.
Bhagalpur emerged as the best-performing district in terms of disposal rate. Out of 2,880 complaints, 2,832 were resolved. Officials credited the performance to swift action, sustained counselling efforts and improved coordination between departments.
Other districts, including Purnia, Saran, Gopalganj and Kishanganj, also reported relatively strong disposal rates. However, Jehanabad lagged behind, with only 964 cases resolved out of 2,293 complaints, prompting a departmental review of pending cases.
Officials from the Women and Child Development Corporation said Helpline 181 continues to provide legal assistance, counselling and immediate support to women in distress. They added that, in response to the rising number of cyber-related complaints, awareness initiatives on digital safety are being expanded across the state.
