Saharanpur/Samastipur: In a major breakthrough, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) has killed Bihar’s most wanted criminal Lallan Singh alias Lallan in an encounter in Saharanpur. The accused was wanted in seven murders, multiple cases of robbery, bank cash van loots, and attacks on police personnel in both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. A reward of Rs 1.25 lakh had been declared on him.

According to ADG Amitabh Yash, the encounter took place around 1:30 am on Sunday night near the Sarsawa–Nakud road during a routine checking operation led by ASP Lal Pratap Singh.

Encounter during STF checking operation

Police officials said the STF team stopped two suspicious men travelling on a motorcycle. Instead of surrendering, they opened fire at the police team.

In retaliatory firing, Lallan Singh was shot and injured, while his associate managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

The injured criminal was first taken to a Community Health Centre (CHC) and later referred to the district hospital due to critical condition. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The encounter took place under the jurisdiction of Sarsawa police station.

Massive criminal record across Bihar and UP

Police confirmed that Lallan Singh was involved in a long series of violent crimes, including:

  • Killing of two sub-inspectors
  • Murder of a bank cashier and security guard
  • Attacks on police teams
  • Multiple cash van robberies and ATM-related loot cases
  • Total of 7 murders across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh

He was also a key member of an organised gang operating across state borders.

Family history of crime and previous encounters

Police sources revealed that Lallan’s two brothers — Rajneesh alias Bauaa Singh and Manish Singh — were killed in police encounters four years ago. Lallan had managed to escape at that time.

The family has a long criminal history, with several members linked to serious offences. Another brother is currently lodged in Hajipur jail.

His elder brother reportedly lives a separate life in Punjab, while others remained connected to criminal activities.

Weapons and recovery from spot

From the encounter site, STF recovered:

  • Motorcycle used for escape
  • Pistols
  • Live cartridges
  • Spent bullet shells

Heavy police deployment was seen in the area after the encounter.

Crime network and family background

Lallan Singh was a resident of Nandgolwa village under Mohiuddin Nagar police station in Samastipur district, Bihar. His father, Shiv Shankar Singh, is a farmer, while his mother is a homemaker. The family has five sons and three daughters.

Police said four brothers were involved in criminal activities, while one elder brother had distanced himself from the family years ago.

Major bank robbery and murder cases

One of the most serious cases linked to the gang was a Rs 60 lakh daylight bank robbery in 2017 in Patna, where three people, including bank employees and a driver, were shot dead.

The gang also allegedly shot a sub-inspector in Varanasi and looted his service pistol, later triggering a series of encounters.

2022 Varanasi attack and police retaliation

On November 8, 2022, Lallan and his brothers allegedly shot Sub-Inspector Ajay Yadav in Varanasi and looted his government pistol, cartridges, and mobile phone.

Twelve days later, on November 21, 2022, police engaged the trio in an encounter in which Rajneesh and Manish were killed, while Lallan escaped again.

Family reaction: distancing from accused

Lallan’s parents have claimed no connection with his criminal activities.

His father said he is physically disabled and survives with difficulty, while his mother stated that the family had no contact with him for years.

His wife reportedly lives separately with her children in her maternal home.

Criminal history timeline

Lallan Singh’s criminal record spans nearly a decade, including:

  • 2016: Attack on police officers in Nalanda and Patna, multiple pistols looted
  • 2017: Bank robbery in Patna involving three murders and Rs 60 lakh loot
  • 2022: Escape from custody in Patna court
  • 2022: Series of murders, robberies, and attacks on police in Varanasi and Chandauli
  • 2023: Continued cases related to absconding and non-compliance with court orders

STF confirms end of long crime trail

Officials said the encounter marks the end of a long-running criminal network responsible for multiple brutal killings and interstate robberies.

Further investigation is underway to trace remaining members of the gang who are still absconding.
