New Delhi/Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has injected a significant dose of cultural and administrative fresh blood into its Bihar campaign by announcing its second list of 12 candidates. The announcement brings the total number of candidates declared by the party to 83, out of the 101 seats it plans to contest.
The new list is dominated by two high-profile entrants designed to capture public imagination and highlight clean governance credentials:
- Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur has been nominated from the Alirajpur constituency, leveraging her significant regional appeal.
- Former IPS officer Anand Mishra has been named the candidate from the strategically important Buxar seat.
Strategic Ticket Cuts and Party Renewal
The introduction of these new faces comes at the expense of several long-serving veterans, signaling the party’s clear intent for strategic renewal. The BJP decisively cancelled the tickets of several incumbent MLAs to make way for new leadership:
- Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav, a five-time MLA who had long represented the Patna Sahib seat, was dropped. High Court lawyer Ratnesh Kushwaha has been fielded in his place.
- Five-time MLA Arun Kumar Sinha from Kumhrar also had his ticket cut, with Sanjay Gupta, a former state general secretary, taking his place.
- In the Riga seat (Sitamarhi), the party replaced sitting MLA Motilal Prasad with Baidyanath Prasad, a 60-year-old former MLC and senior party leader.
Candidate Count and Overall Strategy
The second list follows the BJP’s initial announcement on October 14th, which named 71 candidates.
Out of the 56 sitting BJP MLAs who contested the initial 71 seats, the party has shown strong, but selective, faith by repeating 46 incumbents while axing 10. The combined lists feature 13 ministers and 9 women candidates, reinforcing the party’s ministerial strength while making strategic adjustments to perceived weak links. With 83 candidates announced so far, the party still has 18 seats left to finalize before reaching its 101-seat quota.
