Patna: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI), calling for the cancellation of RJD candidate Shweta Suman’s nomination from the Mohania assembly constituency in Bihar’s Kaimur district.
According to the BJP, Suman—who represents the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) led by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav—is not a native of Bihar. The party alleges that she originally hails from Sakaldiha in Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, which, if true, would make her ineligible to contest from a Scheduled Caste reserved seat in Bihar.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP’s state media centre in Patna, Vidyanchal Rai, head of the BJP’s judicial and Election Commission liaison department, said that Shweta Suman had mentioned her Uttar Pradesh address in her 2020 election affidavit when she contested from the same seat. “This time, she has listed a Bihar address. This inconsistency must be investigated,” he said.
Rai added that the party would submit a written complaint to Bihar’s Chief Electoral Officer, urging the ECI to act swiftly. “Only a native of Bihar can contest from a reserved constituency in the state. The Election Commission must uphold this rule,” he said.
The BJP’s Sangeeta Devi, who previously contested from the same seat on an RJD ticket in 2020 before joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is contesting against Shweta Suman this year. The Mohania assembly seat, reserved for Scheduled Castes, falls under the Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency.
