Patna: In the heart of Patna, the Buddha Memorial Park is emerging as a calm and meaningful space dedicated to Lord Buddha’s message of peace and compassion. The park is being developed as the world’s first memorial park where multiple countries have built Buddhist stupas within a single complex. It reflects Bihar’s deep historical connection with Buddhism, as the state is home to Bodh Gaya, the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. Designed as a place for reflection and cultural exchange, the park offers a peaceful environment away from the noise of city life.
The Buddha Memorial Park was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama, giving the project international recognition and spiritual importance. The park is now close to completing its international memorial stupa project, which is being guided by the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) with support from the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO). As part of this initiative, 20 Buddhist countries were invited to construct memorial stupas in the park. Once completed, it will be the only park of its kind in the world.
Each participating country has built its stupa in a traditional architectural style, reflecting its own Buddhist heritage. Countries such as Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar have taken part, along with Taiwan, Tibet, Buddhist organisations from China, the United States and Arunachal Pradesh. Most of the stupas are between 10 and 12 feet high, but each one is unique in design and detail.
The Indonesian stupa stands out as a miniature replica of the ancient Borobudur temple, with carvings that show scenes from the life of Lord Buddha. Together, these structures make the Buddha Memorial Park a powerful symbol of global harmony and shared values. As the project nears completion, the park is expected to draw visitors from across India and around the world, offering a quiet space that celebrates peace, unity and cultural understanding.
