Raxaul: In a significant crackdown on corruption within the Indian Railways, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Commercial Superintendent Manik Chand of the Samastipur Railway Division in connection with a bribery case at the Raxaul railway station’s parcel office.
The operation unfolded late Tuesday evening when a special CBI team raided the parcel office in Raxaul and caught booking clerk Veeresh Kumar red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹20,000. During initial questioning, Kumar confessed that he was collecting the bribe on the instructions of his superior, Manik Chand.
Acting swiftly on this lead, the CBI team moved to Samastipur and arrested Manik Chand from his official residence, where he was present at the time of the arrest. The entire operation was carried out by a seven-member team from the CBI, sources said.
The arrest has triggered concern across the East Central Railway zone, as it has brought to light the alleged involvement of senior officials in corrupt practices related to the parcel booking system. The CBI is now conducting a comprehensive probe into the bribery racket, and the role of other railway personnel is also under scrutiny.
