Patna: The first phase of Census 2027 India will be conducted between May 2 and May 31, 2026, with authorities introducing a fully digital process and a self-enumeration facility for citizens.
In Bihar, the phase—referred to as the “House-listing and Housing Census”—will mark a significant shift towards online data collection.
Self-enumeration from April 17
Officials said residents will be able to submit their household details online through a self-enumeration portal from April 17 to May 1.
The process allows citizens to register using the name of the head of the household and a mobile number of any family member. Upon completion, a unique ID will be generated, which must be presented to the enumerator during field verification.
Authorities said the system is designed to be simple, secure and time-efficient, enabling people to participate from their homes.
Digital shift in census process
At a joint press briefing by the Directorate of Census Operations and the Press Information Bureau, officials highlighted that the entire census process will be conducted digitally this time.
Ranjita, director of census operations and citizen registration in Bihar, said the move aims to streamline data collection and improve efficiency.
Data privacy assurances
Officials emphasised that all data collected under the Census Act, 1948 will remain strictly confidential.
They said digital tools used in the process are encrypted to ensure the security of personal information and protect citizen privacy.
Call for public participation
Authorities have urged residents to make full use of the self-enumeration facility, describing the census as a task of national importance.
Officials said higher participation through the digital platform would help ensure timely and accurate data collection, supporting planning and public welfare initiatives in the years ahead.
