Patna: New revelations have emerged in the high-profile murder case of gangster Chandan Mishra, as shooter Tausif Badshah, currently in police custody, has made explosive confessions during interrogation. On completion of his 72-hour police remand, Tausif reportedly admitted to carrying out the killing without accepting any money—driven instead by his closeness to co-conspirator Nishu Khan, a relative with whom he shared deep ties.
Sources close to the investigation that Tausif and his associates had partied the night before the July 17 murder, staying awake until morning before arriving at Paras Hospital, where Mishra was admitted. Surveillance footage and testimonies indicate that the gang entered through the hospital’s rear gate, where no guards were posted, before locating room 209 with the help of a staff member under false pretences.
Tausif claimed that Sheru Singh, an associate lodged in Purulia jail, had coordinated with the shooters by phone, speaking to them multiple times in the lead-up to the murder. Sheru allegedly advised the group to flee to Nepal via Bihar after the killing to avoid arrest, fearing his own involvement might surface.
The murder was reportedly planned at Nishu’s house in Samanpura—ironically, the same locality where Paras Hospital is situated. According to investigators, a hotel room in Kolkata had been pre-booked on July 16, one day before the killing. After executing the plan, Tausif, Nishu, his girlfriend, and two others fled through a route that included Gaya, Barhi, and Ranchi, eventually reaching Kolkata.
In a bid to evade identification, Tausif got a clean shave at a local salon after spotting his own image in news coverage of the murder. Police say this was an attempt to avoid recognition should his photo be circulated by the authorities.
Interestingly, Tausif has told police he committed the murder without an advance payment. However, investigators believe Rs 5 lakh was paid to the mastermind behind the operation.
The assassination of Chandan Mishra, who was on parole from Beur Jail for his father’s treatment, took place just one day before he was due to return to custody. Five armed men stormed his hospital room and fired multiple rounds, killing him on the spot. Police believe two of the assailants had visited Mishra’s native village of Sonvarsha days before the murder, possibly to track his movements.
In the hours following the shooting, local police were swift to respond, but close aides of Mishra had already reached the hospital. Authorities suspect that Mishra’s gang had been anticipating an attack, which may explain their presence near the facility.
Police have since questioned hospital staff and are examining how the assailants accessed Mishra’s ward with relative ease. According to the investigation, Tausif initially attempted to enter via the front gate but was stopped by security, prompting a detour through the unguarded rear entry.
Following the crime, Tausif allegedly returned home to Phulwari Sharif and took his sister to her in-laws’ residence in Gaya before fleeing to Kolkata. Investigators are now probing whether local criminals went into hiding following Mishra’s release from jail, and are expanding their inquiry into the wider network that facilitated the murder.
