Patna: Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan has renewed his push for a mega textile park in Bhagalpur, writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the demand under the PM Mitra Yojana. In his letter, Chirag argued that such a park would drive economic growth in the region and connect its historic textile legacy with modern industry.
Highlighting Bhagalpur’s centuries-old silk tradition, Chirag said that selecting the region for a textile park would give fresh momentum to local livelihoods and preserve a globally recognised craft. “India is making unique progress in every field today. Bhagalpur should be selected for a mega textile park so that the historical heritage of this region can be linked to modernity and the local economy can be given a new impetus,” Chirag wrote. This is his second such appeal to the Prime Minister.
Bhagalpuri silk—often hailed as the “Queen of Fabrics”—has been a mainstay of Indian handicrafts for centuries. Its production in the region dates back to the Buddhist period. Generations of local weavers have built an international reputation for Bhagalpuri silk, which continues to enjoy strong demand in markets such as Japan, Europe, and West Asia.
The PM Mitra Yojana, which aims to promote the textile sector and create employment through the establishment of seven mega textile parks across India, has so far selected Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. Bihar was not included in the initial list—despite the fact that Union Minister Giriraj Singh, MP from Begusarai, currently heads the textiles portfolio.
