Patna: Congress has initiated the process of selecting candidates for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, even as seat sharing within the grand alliance remains unresolved. The party’s screening committee is scheduled to meet in Delhi on September 9 and 10 to discuss potential constituencies and candidates.
The committee meeting, chaired by Ajay Maken, will include state president Rajesh Ram, state in-charge Krishna Allavaru, party leaders in the Legislative Assembly and Council Shakeel Ahmed Khan and Madan Mohan Jha, as well as all three state secretaries for the first time.
In the 2020 assembly elections, Congress contested 70 seats, winning 19. These constituencies will be given priority in the current selection process. Survey feedback may lead to changes in tickets for sitting legislators, while names of candidates for potential strongholds will also be considered. The final announcement will follow the meeting of the Central Election Committee.
Congress sources indicated that apart from reviewing sitting MLAs, the committee will explore other strong candidates in constituencies where the party has a competitive edge. The process reflects an early push to position Congress strategically, despite the ongoing uncertainty over the alliance’s seat allocation.
