Darbhanga : The construction of the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Darbhanga has moved a step forward, with HSCC (India) Limited inviting tenders worth Rs 1,549.25 crore for the project.
The proposed medical institute will be developed at Shobhan in Darbhanga district on approximately 182 acres of land. The project includes the construction of hospital buildings, an academic block, residential facilities and other essential infrastructure.
The construction period has been set at 30 months under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model. Interested agencies can submit their bids online until November 27, 2026.
HSCC Invites Bids For Hospital And Academic Infrastructure
The tender covers the development of the main infrastructure required for the proposed medical institute. This includes hospital facilities, academic buildings, residential accommodation and other supporting infrastructure.
The EPC model involves a contractor undertaking engineering, procurement and construction responsibilities in accordance with the project’s specified requirements.
The next steps include completing the tender process, selecting the construction agency and proceeding with the project as per the prescribed conditions. The 30-month construction timeline is expected to guide the implementation schedule once the work begins.

AIIMS Darbhanga Expected To Strengthen Healthcare In North Bihar
The proposed institute is expected to improve access to specialised healthcare for residents of Darbhanga and other districts across north Bihar. Patients requiring advanced treatment often travel to Patna and other major cities for specialised medical services.
Once operational, AIIMS Darbhanga is expected to expand the availability of advanced treatment facilities closer to home for people in the region. Its location may also improve access to healthcare for patients from neighbouring areas, including parts of Nepal that currently rely on facilities across the border.
However, the benefits will depend on the completion of construction, the establishment of medical services and the availability of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Medical Education, Research And Employment Opportunities
Beyond patient care, the proposed institute is expected to support medical education and research in the region.
The academic infrastructure could provide opportunities for medical training and specialised learning, while the institute’s eventual operations may generate employment across healthcare, administration, technical services and support functions.
The project is also expected to contribute to the development of healthcare infrastructure around Darbhanga. Construction activity and the eventual establishment of a major medical institution could create opportunities for related services and businesses.
November 27 Deadline For Tender Submission
According to the tender notice details reported on October 30, interested agencies have until November 27, 2026, to submit their bids online.
The tender marks an important stage in the development of AIIMS Darbhanga, but the construction timeline will depend on the completion of the bidding process, contractor selection and the commencement of work.
The proposed institute is expected to become a significant addition to north Bihar’s healthcare infrastructure, with its progress now linked to the next stages of procurement and construction.
