Darbhanga: Darbhanga, a historic city of north Bihar, is now moving towards a new identity. For many years, it was known mainly for its culture, trade and old markets. Today, it is stepping into a modern future with large development projects supported by the central and state governments. Through national missions like the Smart City Mission and Vikasit Bharat, the focus is on better roads, digital growth, clean surroundings and new job opportunities. Because of this, the dream of Darbhanga becoming a major city is no longer far away.
One of the biggest changes is the plan to develop Darbhanga Airport into an international airport. This airport will also include a cargo and logistics park, which will help local businesses send and receive goods faster. At the same time, three major ponds – Gangasagar, Harahi and Digghi Pokhar – are being joined together to form a large lake. This lake will spread across 156 acres and is being built with an investment of Rs 75.28 crore. The area will have clean water, beautiful ghats, walking paths and decorative lights. It will become a new tourist attraction and improve the city’s beauty.
Road and transport projects are also changing the face of Darbhanga. An elevated road will connect Darbhanga Railway Station to the Amas–Darbhanga Expressway. Another elevated stretch will link Karpuri Chowk to Ekmi through Laheriasarai. The Patna–Purnia Expressway will also pass through the city, making travel easier. The Shobhan–Ekmi bypass, which leads to the under-construction AIIMS, is being widened to four lanes. Important roads like Sakri–Benipur–Baheri via Donar are also being converted into four-lane roads. Darbhanga Railway Station is being upgraded into a world-class station, and six new road overbridges are under construction to reduce traffic jams.
Darbhanga is also becoming a centre for education, health and technology. Bihar’s second planetarium is already open here. The state’s first modern IT park under the Software Technology Park of India in Ramnagar is helping young people find jobs in the tech sector. The upcoming Darbhanga AIIMS will bring advanced healthcare to people of north Bihar and nearby Nepal. DMCH is also being expanded into a 1,700-bed hospital. With new hotels, resorts, shops and investments coming in, Darbhanga is once again becoming a busy trade city. From a quiet town, it is now growing into a modern and promising urban centre.
