Darbhanga: A man has been arrested for reportedly abusing the mother of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a public event in Bihar. The accused, identified as Mohammad Rizvi, also known as Raja, allegedly made the remarks from a stage set up for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Voter Adhikar Yatra.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Bithauli, under the Simri police station area, when Rizvi reportedly used offensive language about PM Modi’s mother. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting an FIR at Simri police station. Rizvi, a resident of Bhopura village in the Singhwada area of Darbhanga, was detained in a late-night police raid and is currently under interrogation.
The stage where the remarks were made had been organised by Congress ticket aspirant Mohammad Naushad, who later apologised for the incident on social media. Naushad said he was unaware when the abuse occurred and claimed he was distressed by the episode.
The incident drew sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, demanding an apology from Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, who were leading the yatra. An FIR was also filed in Patna’s Kotwali police station on the basis of the viral video.
The Bihar State Women’s Commission has taken note of the matter and sent a letter to the Darbhanga district magistrate urging action. The police have not released further details but are expected to provide an update at a press conference on Friday.
