Patna: Hajipur is set to become the site of North Bihar’s first double-decker flyover, a development expected to ease congestion for commuters travelling between Patna and the northern districts. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will oversee the construction, with an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore.
The five-kilometre, 12-lane flyover will run from Ramashish Chowk to Paswan Chowk, linking the Chhapra-Hajipur and Muzaffarpur-Hajipur highways at Ramashish Chowk, known as the “Gateway of North Bihar”. Officials say the project will significantly reduce traffic jams in Hajipur and make commuting to Patna smoother.
Preparations are complete, with the detailed project report (DPR) finalised. Tenders are expected in early September, with work commencing soon after and a target completion within two years.
Vaishali district magistrate Varsha Singh said the flyover would segregate city-bound and through traffic: vehicles entering Hajipur will use the lower deck, while those heading to other North Bihar cities will travel above. “This project will give wings to Hajipur’s development, bringing the city closer to the infrastructure standards of larger urban centres,” she added.
The flyover will feature 150 pillars across its five-kilometre stretch and will connect to the Chapra overbridge and Muzaffarpur-Hajipur railway overbridge on NH-22. Plans are also underway to enhance the area around BSNL Golambar and beautify the surroundings.
Currently, traffic from districts including Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur, Shivhar, Bettiah, Chhapra, and Siwan converges on Hajipur to cross Gandhi Setu, often causing significant delays at Ramashish and Paswan Chowks. The new flyover is expected to save both time and fuel for daily commuters.
