Darbhanga: Darbhanga has achieved an important milestone by becoming the first district in Bihar to introduce an online registration system for piped natural gas (PNG) connections. This new digital service is being provided by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and allows people to apply for a gas connection without visiting any office. The facility was formally launched by Member of Parliament Dr Gopal Ji Thakur at his parliamentary office in Laheriasarai. With just one click, the system went live, marking a major step towards digital public services in the region.
BPCL has already completed most of the pipeline work in Darbhanga city, and gas lines have also been laid in Baheri and Benipur. Officials have said that the service will soon be expanded to nearby rural areas so that more families can benefit. Dr Thakur said that this online system would be very helpful for common people, as they can now apply from home, track their application status and get their connection in less time. He added that this change will reduce paperwork and long queues at offices.
Piped Natural Gas, or PNG, is a modern system where gas is supplied directly to homes through underground pipelines instead of cylinders. The gas mainly contains methane, which is lighter than air and spreads quickly in case of leakage, making it safer. This method is also cleaner and causes less pollution than traditional fuels. Leaders said the project supports the goals of Digital India and helps protect the environment by promoting clean energy.
