Patna: Patna’s bustling railway station precinct is set for a major facelift with the unveiling of a four-storey multimodal hub and a new subway aimed at streamlining traffic and enhancing commuter safety in one of the city’s busiest transit corridors.

District Magistrate Dr Chandrashekhar Singh, along with municipal commissioner Animesh Parashar, inspected the newly constructed Rs 78 crore facility on Thursday evening. Designed to reduce congestion around Patna Junction, the multimodal hub includes parking for 281 cars and dedicated bays for 32 buses, with additional charging stations for electric buses. The hub also offers commuter amenities such as ticket counters for city bus services, waiting rooms, ATMs, a cafeteria, shops, and a restaurant, allowing passengers to wait comfortably in the event of train delays.

A key highlight of the project is the air-conditioned and automated subway, linking the hub directly to Patna Junction, Mahavir Mandir, and Buddha Smriti Park. Equipped with escalators and elevators, the subway is expected to provide easy access for elderly people, women, and children, offering a safe and efficient alternative to navigating the chaotic station area.

Officials said plans are also in place to designate the immediate vicinity of the station as a “No Auto Zone” to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian safety. To support enforcement, Smart City Patna will install additional CCTV cameras from Patna Junction to the General Post Office (GPO), monitored by a new control room that will also oversee action against illegal parking and vendor encroachment.

The multimodal hub, officials hope, will transform the area into a more organised, commuter-friendly space while reducing the city’s traffic burden.
