Patna: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted searches at multiple premises linked to Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal in connection with an investigation into alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
According to reports, the agency is examining documents and records related to foreign transactions and financial activities. The searches are part of an ongoing investigation into suspected breaches of foreign exchange regulations.
As of publication, Vedanta Group had not issued an official statement regarding the ED’s action.
FEMA Investigation
The Foreign Exchange Management Act governs foreign exchange transactions and overseas financial dealings by individuals and companies.
The ED typically initiates investigations when there are allegations of unauthorised transfer of funds abroad, hawala transactions, acquisition of overseas assets without required approvals, or non-compliance with foreign investment regulations. Such inquiries generally involve scrutiny of financial records, transactions, and related documentation.
Vedanta’s Business Interests
Vedanta is among India’s largest mining and metals companies, with operations spanning aluminium, zinc, oil and gas, and other natural resources sectors.
The company is a major producer of aluminium and zinc in India and has announced significant investment plans across various industrial projects in recent years.
Previous Regulatory Scrutiny
The group has faced regulatory scrutiny related to foreign exchange regulations in the past. In 2004, a Vedanta subsidiary and several of its directors were investigated over alleged violations of foreign exchange norms. Penalties were subsequently imposed following the inquiry.
Manoj Jha Questions Timing of Action
Reacting to the development, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha questioned the circumstances surrounding the ED’s action.
आज सुबह-सुबह ईडी ने एक नए ठिकाने पर दस्तक दी। बताया गया कि यह ठिकाना #Anil_Agarwal के #Vedanta से जुड़ा है जिनका बिहार से ताल्लुक है।

Jha said investigative agencies play an important role in a democratic system but argued that questions often arise when actions appear to coincide with political or business-related developments. He called for a broader discussion on the functioning and use of investigative institutions.
Awaiting Official Response
The outcome of the investigation will depend on the findings of the documents and records being examined by the ED. Attention is now focused on whether the agency uncovers evidence of regulatory violations and how Vedanta responds to the allegations.
Further details are expected as the investigation progresses and official statements emerge from the concerned parties.
