Aurangabad: In an effort to strengthen healthcare services across district hospitals, the NDA government in Bihar has stepped up measures to expand diagnostic facilities, beginning with model hospitals in the state. As part of this initiative, Sadar Hospital will soon introduce electrolyte and thyroid testing services, with electrolyte testing set to be launched first.
On Monday, hospital manager Prafulla Kant Nirala inspected the Central Pathology Laboratory at Sadar Hospital and held discussions with lab in-charge K.N. Shukla regarding the commencement of the new facility. Officials said preparations are underway to ensure the test becomes operational at the earliest.
Electrolyte tests help assess levels of essential minerals such as sodium, potassium and chloride in the body. Due to the absence of this facility at Sadar Hospital so far, patients were forced to rely on private laboratories, often spending thousands of rupees for the test. With the service now being introduced at the government hospital, patients are expected to get timely diagnosis at a significantly lower cost.
Sadar Hospital currently offers 92 different types of diagnostic tests. Dr Devashree Singh, a physician at the hospital, explained that electrolyte imbalance occurs when the levels of minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium fall below normal in the body. She said electrolytes play a crucial role in the functioning of cells, nerves and muscles.
According to Dr Singh, dehydration, excessive sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea, certain medications and diseases such as kidney disorders are among the major causes of electrolyte deficiency. Common symptoms include muscle pain or weakness, fatigue, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, heart-related complications.
Health officials said the expansion of diagnostic services at district hospitals is aimed at improving early detection, reducing out-of-pocket expenses for patients and easing the burden on private healthcare facilities. The government plans to gradually roll out similar facilities in other district hospitals across Bihar.
