Folk Singer Sharda Sinha Posthumously Awarded Padma Vibhushan; Kishore Kunal Receives Padma Shri

New Delhi/Patna: President Droupadi Murmu presented Padma Awards to 68 distinguished personalities at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday. Among the honorees, eminent folk singer Dr. Sharda Sinha was posthumously conferred with the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors. Her son, Dr. Anshuman Sinha, received the prestigious award on her behalf.
Sharda Sinha, affectionately known as “Bihar Kokila,” was celebrated for her profound contributions to folk music, particularly her soulful rendition of Chhath songs, which have become synonymous with the revered festival. The President’s post on X lauded Dr. Sinha as an iconic figure in folk music, whose artistry reflected the multifaceted aspects of social existence and whose songs sanctified the Chhath festival.
During the ceremony, Dr. Anshuman Sinha expressed his deep emotions, stating his immense pride in his mother’s accomplishments and her unwavering dedication to folk music throughout her life. He also conveyed his sadness at her physical absence.
Former IPS officer and late chairman of the Mahavir Mandir Trust, Kishore Kunal, was also posthumously honored with the Padma Shri. His son, Sayan Kunal, accepted the award.
In addition to these honors, Bhim Singh Bhavesh from Ara was presented with the Padma Shri. A journalist by profession, Bhavesh was recognized for his significant social work, including facilitating the admission of Musahar community children into schools and establishing a library for their education.
