Patna: Four children have drowned in the Ganga River in Bhagalpur district, prompting an outpouring of grief from local authorities and residents.
The tragedy occurred on Monday morning in the Ismailpur police station area, when the children, all residents of a nearby village, went to bathe in the river after helping to clean a Chhath Puja ghat in the Navgachhiya subdivision. Reports suggest that one child began to drown in the deep water, and the others, attempting to save him, also drowned.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his deep condolences to the families of the deceased, calling the incident “deeply tragic” and praying for the strength of the families to endure their loss.
The accident highlights ongoing safety concerns around river ghats, which see increased activity during festival periods such as Chhath Puja. Local authorities have urged families and communities to exercise caution near the river.
