Patna: After a subdued start to the monsoon, fresh rains are expected to lash Bihar from June 29, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting a revival of monsoon activity across the state. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for nine districts, including Patna, on June 30.
According to the IMD, conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for widespread showers across regions from Ara to Kishanganj and from Gaya to Bettiah. The rainfall is expected to intensify through the first week of July. While official confirmation of July’s rainfall outlook is expected on June 30, preliminary indicators suggest normal to above-normal precipitation for the month.
The IMD has also noted a rise of 2 to 3°C in maximum temperatures across the state in recent days, while minimum temperatures have remained largely stable.
Since its arrival in Bihar on June 17, the monsoon initially brought good rains to several districts. However, over the past week, the momentum has waned, with isolated areas receiving heavy showers while most regions remained relatively dry.
As a result, the state has recorded a rainfall deficit of 22% so far. Against a normal average of 115.9 mm by June 26, Bihar has received just 90.1 mm. Despite this shortfall, the IMD continues to forecast 11% above-normal rainfall for the overall monsoon season.
The anticipated resurgence of monsoon activity comes as welcome news for the farming community. The recent rainfall has already improved seedling coverage, which now stands at 41%, raising hopes for a strong start to the kharif season.
