Patna: The rising water level of the Ganga has prompted a high alert across eight Bihar districts, including Patna, as the river is forecast to cross its peak water level at Gandhi Ghat in Patna on Thursday night and at Hathidah in Mokama on Friday afternoon.
The forecast, issued by the Water Resources Department, has led the Disaster Management Department to advise residents living along riverbanks and in low-lying areas to remain vigilant.
The districts under the alert are Bhojpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Nalanda, Begusarai, Lakhisarai and Jehanabad.
Residents Advised To Avoid Vulnerable Areas
The department has urged people to avoid unnecessary visits to rivers, ghats, embankments and low-lying areas.
Residents have also been advised to keep children, elderly people and persons with disabilities away from rivers and waterlogged areas.
People should remain aware of safe locations and relief camps identified by local administrations and move to these facilities if the situation requires evacuation.
Emergency Supplies Should Be Kept Ready
The Disaster Management Department has advised residents in vulnerable areas to keep essential documents, medicines, mobile phones, torches, drinking water and other necessities safely packed and readily accessible.
It has also warned people against bathing or swimming in the river, making unnecessary boat trips and taking selfies near the water.
Authorities Urge People To Rely On Official Information
Residents have been asked not to believe or spread rumours about the flood situation and to rely only on information issued by district administrations and the Disaster Management Department.
People have also been instructed to follow directions from local authorities and rescue teams immediately if water levels rise or flooding occurs.
