Gaya: A promising fast bowler from Gaya has moved a step closer to the Indian Premier League after being shortlisted by Punjab Kings for a net bowler trial ahead of the 2026 season of the Indian Premier League. The selection marks a significant opportunity for Anees Kumar, whose consistent performances at the local level have drawn attention from professional scouts.
Kumar received an email invitation to attend trials held in Ludhiana on February 18, where he showcased disciplined line and length alongside impressive pace. Observers said his ability to maintain accuracy under pressure stood out during the evaluation sessions.
During the trials, Kumar bowled to domestic and IPL batter Nehal Wadhera, delivering what coaches described as a balanced and impactful spell. The youngster is now awaiting confirmation from the franchise regarding the final shortlist, a decision that could shape the next phase of his cricketing journey.
This is not Kumar’s first brush with IPL selectors. In 2022, he had been shortlisted for net bowling trials by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, though the process was disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. That earlier recognition is believed to have contributed to his latest opportunity with Punjab Kings.
A resident of Kevli in Gaya, Kumar trains at the Boys Cricket Academy, one of the district’s oldest coaching centres. His coach, Rajesh Kumar AD, described him as disciplined and dedicated, with the technical ability and temperament required for higher-level cricket. News of his selection has generated excitement among local players and supporters, who are now waiting for the franchise’s final decision.
