Gold Still Rs 19,000 More Expensive This Year
Despite Thursday’s decline, gold remains significantly more expensive than at the end of 2025.
Gold was priced at more than Rs 1.33 lakh per 10 grams on December 31, 2025. It now stands at around Rs 1.52 lakh, representing an increase of approximately Rs 19,000.
During the same period, gold reached an all-time high of Rs 1.76 lakh per 10 grams on January 29, according to the figures provided.
Silver has also gained during 2026. From around Rs 2.30 lakh per kg on December 31, 2025, it has risen to about Rs 2.34 lakh, an increase of roughly Rs 4,000.
Silver also touched a reported high of Rs 3.86 lakh per kg on January 29.
Two Things To Check Before Buying Gold
Consumers buying gold should check the purity and prevailing price before completing a purchase.
Buy certified gold: Buyers should look for a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmark, which indicates the purity of the gold. The hallmark identification is alphanumeric.
Cross-check the rate: Buyers should verify the day’s price and the exact weight before purchasing. Rates differ according to purity, including 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold.
Four Ways To Check Silver
The supplied information also suggests four simple checks for silver:
- Magnet test: Genuine silver should not stick to a magnet.
- Ice test: Ice is expected to melt quickly when placed on genuine silver because of its thermal conductivity.
- Smell test: Genuine silver is generally odourless, while some imitations may have a copper-like smell.
- Cloth test: Rubbing silver against a white cloth may leave a black mark due to tarnishing.
These simple tests can provide indications, but they should not be treated as definitive proof of purity; professional testing and hallmarking remain more reliable.
