Gold down Rs 21,000 from January peak
Gold prices have fluctuated significantly during 2026. On December 31, 2025, gold was priced at around Rs 1.33 lakh per 10 grams. The price subsequently climbed to an all-time high of Rs 1.76 lakh on January 29.
With the latest rate at Rs 1.55 lakh, gold is now around Rs 21,000 below its January peak.
Silver has followed a similar trajectory. Its price stood at approximately Rs 2.30 lakh per kg on December 31, 2025, before rising to an all-time high of Rs 3.86 lakh per kg on January 29. It has since declined by around Rs 1.51 lakh.
The information provided attributes the recent decline in precious metals to a rise in crude oil prices amid heightened tensions involving the United States and Iran.
Three things to remember when buying gold
Buy certified gold: Consumers should purchase gold bearing the BIS hallmark, which indicates its purity. The hallmark includes an alphanumeric identification code.
Cross-check the day’s rate: Buyers should verify the day’s gold price and the exact weight before making a purchase. Rates differ according to purity, including 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold.
Negotiate making charges: Making charges are levied by jewellers for converting gold into jewellery and are not necessarily fixed. Buyers can ask for a detailed breakdown of these charges and negotiate, particularly for larger purchases.
