Gold remains significantly costlier than last year
Despite Thursday’s decline, gold has risen sharply in 2026. The price of 10 grams stood at around Rs 1.33 lakh on December 31, 2025, compared with around Rs 1.58 lakh currently.
Silver has also gained over the same period, rising from Rs 2.30 lakh per kg at the end of 2025 to around Rs 2.40 lakh.
Both precious metals have witnessed considerable volatility this year. Gold touched an all-time high of Rs 1.76 lakh per 10 grams, while silver reached Rs 3.86 lakh per kg on January 29.
Three things to check before buying gold
With jewellery purchases likely to increase around Raksha Bandhan and the upcoming festive season, buyers should keep three points in mind.
- Buy BIS-hallmarked gold:
Always check that the jewellery carries the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmark. The hallmark includes an alphanumeric identification code, such as AZ4524, and helps establish the purity of the gold. - Cross-check the day’s rate:
Buyers should verify the exact weight and prevailing gold price before making a purchase. Rates differ according to purity, including 24-carat, 22-carat and 18-carat gold. Checking rates from multiple sources can help consumers make an informed decision. - Negotiate making charges:
Making charges are levied by jewellers for crafting gold into jewellery and are not necessarily fixed. Buyers can ask for a detailed breakdown of labour and making costs and negotiate, particularly when making a larger purchase.
