Patna: The century-old Government Tibbi College and Hospital is set to move to a new Rs 245.5 crore campus within the Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) complex by 2027, marking one of the biggest infrastructure upgrades in its history.
The new campus, being developed on a 10-acre site in Agamkuan, will increase the hospital’s bed capacity from 120 to 200, allowing more patients to receive inpatient treatment while expanding facilities for Unani medical education and healthcare.
New Campus Unveiled During Centenary Celebrations
The college administration presented the blueprint of the new campus during the institution’s centenary celebrations held on Tuesday.
Principal Prof. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman said the college and hospital would shift from their existing Kadamkuan campus to the new facility once construction is completed in 2027.
Hospital Capacity to Increase by 80 Beds
According to the administration, the hospital currently treats around 500 outpatients every day, but many patients cannot be admitted because of limited bed availability.
The additional 80 beds at the new hospital are expected to improve access to inpatient care and treatment for patients arriving from different parts of Bihar.
Government Promises Continued Support
Planning and Development Minister Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha, who inaugurated the centenary event, described Government Tibbi College and Hospital as an important institution for Bihar.
He said the state government would continue supporting the college’s development and stressed the need to strengthen Unani medical education by integrating modern healthcare infrastructure and technology.
Speakers Highlight Institution’s Legacy
Former Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad spoke about his long association with the institution and said the Unani system of medicine continues to enjoy public confidence.
Md. Irshadullah, Chairman of the Sunni Waqf Board, highlighted the college’s contribution to medical education, while Hospital Superintendent Prof. Shahnawaz Akhtar said the hospital’s patient load has been increasing steadily.
According to Akhtar, the hospital also provides several diagnostic tests and medicines free of cost to patients.
A Century of Unani Medical Education
Government Tibbi College was established on July 28, 1926, beginning with just 10 students at its Bhikhna Pahari campus.
Over the past century, the institution has operated from Ramna Road, Anta Ghat, and its present Kadamkuan campus. It is now preparing to shift to its new campus at Agamkuan.
The college currently offers 125 undergraduate (UG) seats and 31 postgraduate (PG) seats annually.
